This year’s holiday break may go into the record books as one of the longest for students in

the Ferndale Public School system, where students wlll get another day off because of brutally cold weather and hazardous driving conditions.

Students haven’t been in school since Dec. 20.

This includes all Ferndale Schools:

  • Little Eagles Preschool

  • Grant Early Childhood Center

  • Roosevelt Primary School

  • Coolidge Intermediate School

  • John F. Kennedy School

  • Ferndale Middle School

  • Ferndale High School

  • University High School

  • Digital Learning Center at Taft

  • Adult Ed at Jefferson

  • CASA

The following people are being asked to report:

  • Building Administrators

  • Secretaries

  • Harding Staff

  • Maintenance and Custodial Staff

Also, the  2014 Kindergarten Round Up that was scheduled for Wednesday has also been canceled. A rescheduled date will be determined and communicated in the near future.

Recently, Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation allowing schools with too many snow days to avoid having to schedule extra days in the summer.

Michigan school districts are required to provide 1,098 hours of instruction over the course of at least 170 days, Harting said.

According to Public Act 29 of 2013, school districts that weren't open at least 170 days can continue receiving state funding, as long as they still meet the 1,098-hour minimum. That means school districts that had more than six snow days this year can hold longer days for the remainder of the school year instead of adding days.

The new law only applies to the current school year.

Yesterday, the staff of the Ferndale Public Library braved record-breaking cold to keep the LIBRARY OPEN, and they will do so again today—so consider spending some of your wintry Wednesday here.
