Ferndale Schools See Progress, Decline in MEAP Scores

Eighth grade math scores up; seventh grade reading drops.

Test scores from the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) were released Thursday, grading students' progress is such subjects as math, reading, writing, science and social studies for third- through ninth-graders.

Districtwide numbers show Ferndale Schools are below the state averages with the except of third -grade math scores at about 1 percent higher and third-grade reading scores that are about the same as state averages.

Ferndale MEAP scores compared to last year show progress and decline. In general, math scores showed progress across the district with exeptions in fourth and sixth grades, dropping 5.7 percent in fourth grade who met or exceeded Michigan standards, and 4.5 percent in six grade.

Reading district-wide showed decline except in fifth grade where a 3.1 percent increase in students who met or exceeded Michigan standards.

The largest increase was seen in eight grade math scores going from 62 percent of the students who met or exceeded Michigan standards to 75.2 percent. The largest decline was seen in seventh grade reading, going from 77.6 percent to 67.6 percent of the students who met or exceeded Michigan standards.
