Learn About Fracking During Ferndale Town Hall Meeting

The free event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 23 at City Hall.

Residents who want to learn more about fracking in Oakland County can attend a free town hall meeting April 23 at Ferndale City Hall.

The meeting – hosted by the Ferndale Environmental Sustainability Commission and Oakland County Commissioner Helaine Zack – will explore the impact of new state-issued oil and natural gas drilling leases, according to a press release.

"Fracking (short for hydraulic fracturing) is the drilling technique which involves injecting toxic chemicals, sand, and millions of gallons of water under high pressure directly into the ground to release natural gas in shale deposits," Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash wrote in an op-ed on Ferndale Patch in March. "My first Town Hall meeting was in West Bloomfield last month and my second will be in Ferndale in April. I will be bringing experts on the issues to talk to communities and help them understand the issues we face with oil exploration in such a densely populated area."
