Ferndale, Surrounding Neighbors All Lost Population, Housing Vacancies Rose
Compare Ferndale with its immediate neighbors in terms of population and housing.
According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Ferndale lost 10 percent of its population in the past 10 years, dropping from 22,105 to 19,900. But it's far from alone, as the communities surrounding it also lost population since 2000.
In Oak Park, the decrease was as little as 1.6 percent; in Hazel Park, it was as much as 13.4 percent. And though Oakland County's population increased overall, it grew by only 0.7 percent.
In turn, the state of Michigan was the only state in the union to lose population, decreasing 0.5 percent.

Housing vacancies rose in and around Ferndale. Hazel Park's vacancy rate came in at 12.7 percent, but the other cities adjacent to Ferndale (except Pleasant Ridge, whose vacancy rate clocked in at 3.3 percent), hovered around 7 percent or 8 percent.
