Ferndale Salt Trucks Ready as Cooler Temperatures, Snow Move In

The stretch of mild weather has let the city focus on other tasks, including street-sweeping and tree-trimming.

It may have felt like spring for the past several days, but you could be building a snowman soon — albeit a small one.

There was a high of 43 degrees Thursday, but Friday will be much cooler with a high near 33 and a low around 18. Snow accumulation of an additional 1-3 inches is possible, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac.

Mild weather lets crews focus on other tasks

In Ferndale, the mild weather has been a plus for the , which is often busy clearing snow this time of year. Instead, it has been able to continue tasks such as street-sweeping.

"We still have one street sweeper we normally put up for the winter," DPW Director Byron A. Photiades said. "We are sweeping some of our streets."

Photiades said his department has also been picking up litter that normally is covered with snow and has to wait until spring, as well as repairing catch basins and doing some tree-trimming. Attending to water main breaks is also easier when the same resources aren't being used elsewhere, he said.

"That has helped us out," he said.

The city may also use less salt this year, depending on snowfall for the rest of the year, but the deliveries of salt have continued.

"We're going to get winter, we're going to get snow," he said.

Safety Tips for Winter Driving

With winter weather coming, the Michigan State Police wants motorists to know there are several factors to be aware of when stopping and turning in winter weather. The MSP website reminds drivers to brake before making a turn on snow or ice in order to reduce the potential for a skid.
