Ferndale Puts Moratorium on Accepting 'Drug Paraphernalia' Retail Requests

Ferndale City Council Monday night approved a 120-day moratorium on accepting and processing requests by businesses to sell "drug paraphernalia" so the city can study the impact on other ordinances, zoning.

Businesses looking to sell bongs, pipes and other drug paraphernalia in Ferndale will have to wait 120 days. Ferndale City Council has approved a 120-moratorium on the acceptance and processing of requests a retail establishment that intends to sell any items included in the definition of "drug paraphernalia."

"We've had several calls and a number of request, a few fairly serious ones," Ferndale Interim City Manager Mark Wollenweber said. "I, along with city attorney, suggest a moratorium to gives us time to talk with the planning commission and how (these requests) work with other existing ordinances." Wollenweber also said the city needs to look at how to zone for these businesses.
