Ferndale City Council Postpones Final Decision for City Manager

A special meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at City Hall to make the final decision on Ferndale's permanent city manager.

After 90-minute interviews with each of the four candidates, Ferndale City Council wasn't willing to make a final decision on its choice for city manager.

Interviewed were Fred Zorn, Southfield's deputy city administrator since 2008; April McGrath, Ypsilanti's assistant city manager since 2007; Matthew Tepper, assistant city manager and city clerk for Grosse Pointe Farms since 2004; and John Gabor, city manager for Marine City since 2007.

Though the council hasn't narrowed down the candidates, there was debate about Zorn, McGrath and Gabor. The only consensus that was made was that Tepper would not be considered for the job.

Ferndale offered Zorn the city manager's position in 2007, but he withdrew his interest. The job ultimately went to Bob Bruner, who served in that position until he left in February to become city manager in Birmingham. Mark Wollenweber was then hired as interim city manager.

Council said there is no timetable for hiring a permanent city manager.
