Court, Police Department Renovations Kick Off

The project is expected to wrap up next spring.

Work began Wednesday on the 43rd District Court building and Ferndale Police Department renovation project.

Mayor Dave Coulter, City Council members and Oakland County Commissioner Helaine Zack were among the officials on hand during a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday evening at the construction site along East Nine Mile Road.

"We worked hard to develop a design that met the court's and police requirements within our financial limitations," Coulter said in a press release. "This project is funded from a percentage of citation revenues set aside over the past 12 years, which makes it both fiscally responsible and a vast improvement from the existing, dilapidated structures we have today."

Both buildings are more than 50 years old and face asbestos problems and security challenges, according to the city.

Improvements at the court building will include upgraded security, more space and access for visitors who have disabilities; the police station renovations will address safety concerns and expand customer service areas.

The 43rd District Court and Ferndale Police Department operations temporarily have relocated to the lower level of City Hall during the project.
