Census: Household, Family Sizes Shrink in Ferndale

New data from the 2010 U.S. Census give a more detailed picture of Ferndale's demographics and housing characteristics.

More 2010 U.S. Census data was released out last week, including housing, age and sex characteristics. For Ferndale, it showed the average household size shrunk, going from 2.23 to 2.08 people. The average family size also decreased from an average of 2.98 people to 2.85 . These trends followed the state as average household size and family size decreased as well.

Household characteristics also show a change. The number of households with families has decreased from 52.1 percent in 2000 to 45.5 percent 2010, while nonfamily households have increased from 47.9 percent in 2000 to 54.5 percent in 2010. Those living alone have also increased from 35.3 percent in 2000 to 39 percent in 2010.

The 2010 U.S. Census population numbers released in (dropping to 19,900 in 2010 from 22,105 in 2000). The decline in population, however, wasn't unique to Ferndale. All adjacent communities decreased and Michigan was the only state in the union to lose population, declining .5 percent.

The new data also showed Ferndale's median age has increased from 33.4 years old to 35.6 years old. However, when breaking down Ferndale's age demographics, it shows an increase in the 25- to 34-year-old age group from 2000, increasing from 23.3 percent in 2000 to 24.1 percent in 2010. Nearly a quarter of Ferndale's population is 25-34-years old.

The median age of the entire state also increased, from 35.5 years old in 2000 to 38.9 in 2010.
