43rd District Court in Ferndale to Temporarily Relocate

Operations will move beginning July 1 as a renovation of the building gets started.

The 43rd District Court in Ferndale will temporarily relocate beginning Monday, July 1, as a renovation project begins on the building.

The makeover will upgrade security, add 3,000 square feet of space and make the building accessible for visitors who have disabilities at a cost of approximately $1.2 million, according to City Manager April Lynch.

Bids on the project are due at the end of July, she said.

Funds collected from a $20 fee applied to court tickets during the past 12 years will be used to finance the project; no general fund or taxpayer dollars will be used, Lynch added.

“We have been saving for a long time,” Judge Joseph Longo said. “It’s been challenging to keep up with (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements and our space needs; these changes will allow us to provide a much better service to our residents.”

The court at 305 E. Nine Mile Road was slated to close at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 27, and reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, July 1, at two temporary locations, according to a press release:

  • To pay a ticket, file paperwork or report for probation people should go to the temporary court offices located at 423 E. Nine Mile.
  • All court hearings will be held in the City of Ferndale Council Chambers inside City Hall at 300 E. Nine Mile.
Lynch said construction will begin in August and site preparations will be underway in the meanwhile.

The city's goal is for the renovations to be completed by the summer of 2014, according to the press release.
