UPDATE: Oak Park Man Hospitalized After Home Invasion Before Suspects Allegedly Held Up Ferndale Store with Toy Gun

Before allegedly holding up a Ferndale 7-Eleven store, suspects reportedly stole a car and beat up an elderly couple inside their Oak Park home.

Before they allegedly robbed a Ferndale 7-Eleven store with a toy gun early Monday morning and got away with cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes, three men reportedly kicked in the door of a private Oak Park residence and sent a 75-year-old man to the hospital with minor injuries.

Shortly after the  home invasion, the three men arrived in Ferndale, where they allegedly robbed the convenience store with a gun that reportedly looked real, but turned out to be a toy, according to a report in the Daily Tribune.

Two of the suspects, ages 18 and and 29, are in custody while a third remains at large. He is described as black and between 20-30 years of age. He reportedly was wearing a light-colored hat, dark jacket with red writing on the left sleeves, including the letters “M” and “C,” and a logo on the front that included the year “1999.” If you have information, contact Ferndale police at (248) 541-3650.

The two men in custody likely will be formally charged on Wednesday, the newspaper said.

When they were arrested, police found Russian coins reportedly stolen in the alleged home invasion. The newspaper said the man who was hospitalized and his wife, 70, were sleeping, but awoke to the sound of their door being kicked in about 2:30 a.m. The suspects were reportedly inside the house for about 10 minutes, allegedly stuck both victims, ransacked the house and got away with the coins, cash and two television sets.

The alleged crime spree also included a carjacking in Detroit.

Two of three men whose alleged crime spree included using a toy gun to hold up a Ferndale 7-Eleven store  early Monday morning have been arrested, while a third suspect remains at large.

Before arriving at the 7-Eleven at Nine Mile and Pinecrest about 3:40 a.m., the suspects allegedly carjacked a vehicle in Detroit and also beat up an elderly  couple inside their Oak Park home, the Daily Tribune reports.

The suspects next showed up about 3:40 a.m. at the 7-Eleven store at Nine Mile and Pinecrest in Ferndale, police said.

After a Ferndale police chase into Detroit that ended in a crash in the vicinity of Six Mile and Livernois, authorities apprehended two of the suspects. “We caught the one with the gun right away,” Ferndale Police Chief Timothy Collins told the newspaper. “It turned out it was a fake.”

The other two suspects fled. One was located in an abandoned house with the assistance of a tracking dog, Royal Oak, Oak Park and Detroit police.

The two men n custody are in their early 20s and 30s.
