UPDATE: Students Help Police Grab Suspected iPod Thief

Teens call 911, follow suspect until Ferndale police arrive.

Ferndale High School and Middle School students helped police track down an iPod thief Tuesday.

After school let out Tuesday students gathered in . Ferndale Lt. Detective William Wilson said that about 1:30 p.m., a 15-year-old girl saw a 17-year-old boy from Royal Oak Township go into another's backpack and take an iPod. The suspect was then seen pocketing it. Wilson said the suspect attends Jefferson Center.

"The girl then called to teens (nearby) that the culprit stole the iPod," Wilson said. "Kids told him to return it, but he denied stealing anything and tried to walk away."

One of the teens called 911 and a group followed the suspect as he walked to the 7-Eleven at Nine Mile and Pinecrest.

"There, the suspect tried to hid the iPod in a trashcan but was observed doing this by an arriving police officer," Wilson said. "A store employee also saw him throw the iPod in the garbage can. She recovered it and gave it to the police officer."

The suspect was arrested. The officer then found the suspect had a second iPod with him. Wilson said the ownership of the second iPod has not been determined but that police are investigating that it may belong to a teacher at Jefferson.

The suspect is facing a misdemeanor warrant for larceny. He posted interim bond Tuesday for $500. He is charged with a 90 day misdemeanor.
