Still No Suspects for Khamarko's Killer

Ferndale Police continue their search for the discount store owner's killer, while his family looks to sell the business or lease the building.

On Nov. 26, the day after Thanksgiving, the Khamarko family changed forever.

The family patriarch, Karim Khamarko, owned . Sometime between 8:35-8:55 p.m., shortly before he was to close the shop, an individual entered the discount store. What exactly happened then is uncertain, but it ended with two shots fired into Khamarko.

called it a botched robbery. The suspect made off with a nominal amount of cash. A woman came in shortly after the shots were fired and called 911.

His killer is still at large.

"We have evidence being processed at a lab, we're still conducting the investigation on that, but leads haven't been coming in," Ferndale Police Sgt. Detective Patrick Jones said this week. "We'd appreciate anything the public could give us."

The killer left five children, three grandchildren and a wife with a hole in their lives.

"We're doing the best we can and taking it day by day," Candace Khamarko, 23, said Wednesday afternoon.

Following Karim Khamarko's death, Dollar Club Plus closed for a short time but .

"We decided to reopen the store for several reasons," Khamarko's son Kevin told Ferndale Patch in December. "But ultimately, we knew that is what our dad would have wanted."

Working in the store, however, has outright or continue to liquidate the inventory and then lease the building.

"We're still here. We're continuing to sell as much as we can," Candace Khamarko said. She said there hasn't been much in terms of offers. "We'll sell the building or the business or lease it once we've sold out the inventory."

The Khamarkos have been doing business in Ferndale for nearly 15 years. Karim Khamarko ran a video shop on Woodward Heights from 1995-97. He then moved the business to 2750 Hilton, buying the building there. In 2006, he switched his business from a video rental shop to a discount retail store.

A $15,000 reward is still available to anyone who has information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Khamarko's killer.
