UPDATE: Police Attempting to Contact Suspect Who Fled, Leading to Lockdown at Roosevelt Primary

School was on lockdown for part of the morning Friday while police searched for a suspect wearing a hoodie, glasses and a white jacket.

2:30 p.m. Tuesday: An attempted break-in at a home near Roosevelt Primary School in Ferndale is what caused the lockdown at the school on Friday morning, Pleasant Ridge Police Chief Karl Swieczkowski said. Police are still searching for the suspect.

Police noticed a man in a backyard appearing to attempt to break into the home.

"He was either up by the house or looking in the windows," Swieczkowski said Tuesday.

The man was stopped by police and his driver's license was taken before the suspect suddenly fled. The 19-year-old suspect "took off running," Swieczkowski said.

Because the incident occurred in the area of Roosevelt school right near the border of Pleasant Ridge and Ferndale near Nine Mile and Woodward, Pleasant Ridge Police requested the school be placed on lockdown. The lockdown was lifted by 10 a.m. Friday.

Several police departments were involved in the search Friday, including Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Madison Heights and Michigan State Police. An Oakland County helicopter assisted.

"I think that the helicopter just happened to be in the area at the time," Swieczkowski said. "He was trying to assist our officer in finding this guy."

Police are now trying to contact the suspect. "We're going to try to get in touch with him and talk to him," he said.

Swieczkowski said charges could include failure to obey a police officer signal, a misdemeanor. He could not say whether the suspect has a criminal record.

Friday: "We are looking for someone," Ferndale Police Lt. Detective William Wilson said Friday. He added that it wasn't a home invasion – as reported to Ferndale Patch early on by parents – and that details would be available shortly.

Calls placed to the Ferndale Police Department were told it wasn't a home invasion.
