Police Blotter: Public Urination, Concealed Weapon, Attempted Bike Thefts

A man didn't heed Ferndale Police advice after a citation for public urination and was arrested; police found a pistol during a traffic stop; and bike thefts were averted, thanks to a diligent downtown Ferndale patron, reports reveal.

Police say man ignores advice, is arrested

At approximately 2 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a noise complaint in the parking lot near Withington and Planavon, according to their report. Upon arrival, the officers said they encountered a 28-year-old Detroit resident, who appeared to be intoxicated, urinating in the parking lot. The officers wrote him a citation for urinating in public and warned him not to drive. Several minutes later, one of the officers saw the man get into a 1983 Chevy Caprice and begin to drive, the report said. The officer immediately stopped the man, conducted an investigation and arrested him for operating under the influence. His driving record indicated six current suspensions with a prior conviction for driving with a suspended license, Ferndale Police said.

Man arrested on concealed weapon warrant

At approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, a Ferndale officer stopped a 61-year-old Detroit man for going 59 in a 40 mph zone on Eight Mile Road near Woodward Avenue, according to a police report. The officer ran the driver's record, revealing a valid warrant out of Macomb County for carrying a concealed weapon, the report said. The officer advised the man that he was under arrest for the warrant. During a search of the vehicle, the officer located a loaded .45-caliber Taurus pistol in the glove box, Ferndale Police said. The driver’s prior criminal history includes convictions for a 1981 armed robbery and a 1997 charge of carrying a concealed weapon, the report said.

Arrest made in alleged bike theft attempts

At approximately 1 a.m. Friday, Ferndale officers responded to a larceny complaint at the rear of the Woodward Avenue Brewery, according to a report. Dispatch reported that a male wearing a Michigan State University sweatshirt was seen running down the alley after trying to steal two bikes. Police located and arrested a 43-year-old Detroit resident on East Saratoga near the Woodward Avenue alley.

The 41-year-old complainant said he walked out of , formerly Gracie's Underground, at about 1 a.m. and found the suspect leaning over his bicycle with a lock cutter on the ground. The complainant said he thought the suspect was going to steal his bike and told the suspect to move along and leave his bike alone, the police report said. The suspect then walked quickly east across Woodward and south down the alley behind the , according to the report.

The victim told police he followed the suspect from a distance and watched him cut a lock on a second bike that was locked to a rack behind the WAB. The suspect then saw the 41-year-old following him and ran south down the alley to East Saratoga where police caught him, Ferndale Police said. The suspect has an extensive criminal history and is currently on parole, according to police.
