Mother of Teen Burglary Suspect Accused of Attempting to Cover Up Crime

The mother of a suspect in a robbery incident in Ferndale last week is in trouble for allegedly lying to try to help her son, police say.

At 2:03 p.m. on Oct. 21, Ferndale Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Pearson on the report of two males carrying a monitor and other items suspected of being stolen, Ferndale Police Lt. Detective William Wilson said.

A witness, running northbound through residents' backyards, was chasing the suspects, Wilson said.

The arriving officers caught one of the suspects – a  student – in the back property near the softball field of the school, Wilson said. The other suspect escaped.

The teen suspect who was apprehended was taken to the . The suspect's mother, Monique Martin, 36, of Royal Oak Township, showed up at the police station.

"When she came to the station – and during the investigation over the next few days – Martin insisted that the monitor belonged to her and that her son had permission to have it with him," Wilson said. "She claimed the monitor was hers and attempted to take it from possession of the police department."

Ferndale Police then arrested Martin for attempted larceny by false pretenses, a misdemeanor, Wilson said.

Martin was arraigned on those charges in 43rd District Court in Ferndale on  Wednesday afternoon. Her bond was set at $1,000.
