Man in Critical Condition After Car-Pedestrian Crash on I-696

Witnesses report seeing a Royal Oak man intentionally run into oncoming traffic early Sunday morning, according to Michigan State Police.

A Royal Oak man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning on Interstate 696, according to a press release from Michigan State Police.

The incident occurred at 4:25 a.m. on westbound Interstate 696, west of Bermuda. Witnesses reported seeing the man intentionally run into traffic, where he was subsequently hit by a vehicle, according to the release.

Royal Oak and Ferndale Police were first on the scene along with the Royal Oak Fire Department.

The man was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and is listed in critical condition, according to police. Westbound Interstate 696 was closed during the investigation and re-opened at approximately 6 a.m.

The name of the pedestrian is currently withheld until police contact his next of kin.
