Man Accused of Trying to Run Down Wife with Car over Money Owed

The car skipped a parking block and hit building at 600 Wanda St. instead.

Police arrested a Hazel Park resident Monday who they said tried to run over his wife, who allegedly owed him money.

In allegedly attempting to run her over, Theodore Elman, 51, missed and drove his car into a building, ale Lt. Detective William Wilson.. The incident took place at 600 Wanda St., an assisted living home where the woman worked, Wilson said.

"When she refused to give him money, he reacted by pointing his car toward her and revving the engine," Wilson said. "When she continue to refuse him money, he continued to rev the engine, then drove toward her."

The woman avoided being hit but the car went over the parking block and crashed into the rear wall of the building, causing damage to the outside and inside of the home, Wilson said.  Elam then left in the car, Wilson said.

Police went to Elam's home in Hazel Park, Wilson said. When they arrived, they heard noises inside the house. "They entered and found that Elma had destroyed many items inside the house, including furniture and appliances," he said.

Wilson said the officers arrested him without incident.

Elam was charged with felonious assault, which carries a four-year sentence and/or a $2,000 fine. Bond was set at $25,000.
