Laptop Security Device Leads Ferndale Police to Couple with Stolen Property

Three homes in Ferndale were burglarized while the residents were inside, police said.

A laptop security device and a vigilant victim helped lead Ferndale Police to two people who were arrested Tuesday night with stolen merchandise.

Police arrested Antwan Duane Wideman, 30, of Detroit, and Krystle Shamoon, 26, of Madison Heights, who are charged with receiving and concealing stolen property.

According to a report from Ferndale Police, three homes in Ferndale were burglarized between June 7-15.

All of the homes are located along Eight Mile Road between Woodward and Pinecrest, according to a news release from Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson.

One of the items stolen in the burglaries was an Apple laptop computer, which was equipped with a security device that shut down access for use of the computer and resulted in the monitor displaying a message that the computer was stolen and to call the owner.

The owner of the computer received a call from a man who offered to sell the victim back his computer. After the man made arrangements to meet the victim in a parking lot, the victim notified police and an officer posed as the victim to meet the suspect Tuesday night.

Wideman drove to the meeting along with Shamoon, and the two suspects approached the undercover officer in an attempt to sell him the stolen computer, according to the report. Police then arrested the two suspects.

Shamoon had some marijuana in her purse, the report states, and when detectives searched Wideman's Detroit apartment they found marijuana, cash and a handgun. This information is being handed over to the Detroit Police Department for further investigation, Wilson wrote.

Wideman and Shamoon were arraigned Thursday afternoon in on charges of receiving and concealing stolen property. Shamoon is additionally charged with possession of marijuana, police said. Bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety.

Police are still investigating the home invasions. Anybody with information should contact the Ferndale Police Department at 248-541-3650.
