UPDATED: No One Hurt in Ferndale House Fire

A young couple and their children were not home when the St. Louis Street blaze began Tuesday morning; the incident remains under investigation, Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan says.

The Ferndale Fire Department is investigating a fire Tuesday that ravaged a family's St. Louis Street house.

A young couple and their children were not home when the blaze started Tuesday morning on the second floor, Ferndale Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan said.

"No one was home and no one was injured, neither civilian nor firefighter," he said. "There's quite a bit of smoke, so it's going to be a while until they get back in there. Smoke damages a lot of stuff."

Neighbor Bryan Allen described the scene Tuesday in an e-mail to Ferndale Patch.

"I saw smoke pouring out of a front upstairs window and later a ladder propped up against that window," Allen wrote. "There were 2 fire trucks, a couple more pickup trucks with red lights, and 4 or 5 firefighters."

The fire remains under investigation and more details were not immediately available, Sullivan said.
