Ferndale Registered Sex Offender Arrested after Approaching Students in Shelby

A 32-year-old registered sex offender from Ferndale was arrested Thursday morning after police said he approached several students from a junior high school in Shelby Township.

A 32-year-old registered sex offender from Ferndale was arrested Thursday morning after police said he approached several students from a junior high school in Shelby Township who were waiting for the school bus.

A Utica Community Schools bus driver called police at 7:45 a.m. and said a man driving an older Cadillac Seville had approached a 14-year-old girl on her way to the bus stop and asked her personal questions. The incident occurred outside the Crystal Lakes Apartment complex in Shelby Township.

The teen told the other students at the bus stop and the bus driver. They were safely transported to school and interviewed by Shelby detectives when they arrived.

The suspect’s vehicle was spotted shortly after the initial stranger danger report in the area of 23 Mile and Shelby roads. The man’s name is not being released at this time, but police said he is a 32-year-old Ferndale resident and a registered sex offender.

Last spring, a slew of stranger danger reports were made in Shelby Township after at least four students said a Hispanic man in his mid-30s approached them. No arrests were ever made in that case.

Thursday’s incident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Lt. Stan Muszynski at 586-731-2121 Ext. 315, or muszynskis@shelbytwppd.org.
