UPDATED: Carjacking Spree Hits Ferndale

Police said the suspect made several separate attempts to steal cars from their owners on Thursday before getting away with one vehicle.

9:57 p.m. Friday: "Hazel Park Police responded to a report of an armed robbery and became involved in a chase of the stolen Subaru from Ferndale. The driver of the vehicle crashed during the chase and was arrested," a Friday afternoon update from the Ferndale Police Department said. "Both agencies will be working together to determine whether the driver arrested during the chase is the same person who carjacked the vehicle."

3:46 p.m. Friday: Ferndale Police are looking for a man who they say attempted several carjackings on Thursday before getting away with one vehicle.

The attempted carjackings started shortly after police responded to a hit and run accident on the 500 block of Academy around 9:11 p.m. Thursday, according to a press release from police.

The vehicle involved in that accident was stolen in a carjacking in Detroit and later found abandoned on Wordsworth, where the successful carjacking ultimately took place.

At 9:44 p.m., a series of 911 calls alerted police to attempted carjackings taking place in the neighborhood near the hit-and-run. Police say the description of the carjacker matched in all of the crimes.

The first attempt happened on the 500 block of Silman where two men were pulling into their driveway. Police said the suspect banged on the driver’s window and yelled for the driver to get out of the car.

The would-be robber then opened the door and grabbed the driver, who pushed off the assailant and escaped by driving away, police said.

Shortly after, officers responded to the State Fair Market on Hilton where police said the same suspect made two separate attempts to steal cars from the store's owners.

He first approached a man in a Trail Blazer and unsuccessfully tried to steal the vehicle from him. He then approached another man who was leaving the store after making a purchase. The customer heard a man from a Trailblazer yelling at him to be careful of a person who had just tried to carjack him.

That man then saw the robber standing in front of him, police said. The suspect demanded his keys and the victim refused, and pushed the suspect away. The suspect then hit the victim in the head with a brown paper bag he was holding, according to the report.

The victim - who said he heard breaking glass when the bag hit him - suffered a laceration to his head. The suspect then ran away.

While police were searching the area for the suspect, the suspect approached another man after he and his son pulled their Subaru into their drive and parked. The suspect stuck an object into the man’s chest and demanded the keys, which the victim turned over to him. The suspect then fled westbound on Wordsworth in the vehicle, according to police.

Police said the man is described as a black male, 25 to 35 years old, clean shaven with short hair or bald, wearing a dark hoodie and carrying a brown or tan satchel.

The stolen vehicle is a red 2002, Subaru Impreza station wagon. The license plate is BVM 6456.
