Ferndale Police Officer Struck by Alleged Drunken Driver

The officer suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital, according to Ferndale police.

A Ferndale police officer was injured after being struck by an alleged drunken driver early Saturday morning.

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, dispersed a disturbance with a crowd at the corner of E. Breckenridge and Woodward. Police said one officer was walking across Breckenridge when a Dodge Durango turned from northbound Woodward onto eastbound Breckenridge.

The Durango headed for the officer, who signaled and yelled for the vehicle to stop; however, the Durango continued and struck the officer, according to a news release from Ferndale police.

The driver, 33-year-old Aimee Sturm, continued driving into a parking lot. Police stopped her and she seemed unaware that she ran into a person, the report states.

After further investigation, Sturm was arrested for operating while intoxicated. She took a breath test and registered .21, according to police.

The officer was evaluated and treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and was released.

According to the report, Sturm has no prior criminal or driving record. She was arraigned Saturday and bond was set at $750.

Does this have to do with the Snap Fitness parking sting I heard about? Where a drunk person saw their car was about to get towed, so they took a chance on driving away and got caught?

It's time for the bars of Ferndale to start taking responsibility for the actions of their patrons. I'm tired of the bars operating on the mentality that the city of Ferndale is their playground. They create bad behavior, such as loud drunks hanging out in parking lots near residential areas, and they are oblivious to the negative impact that has on the city.

As long as the city is struggling financially this will continue. The bars pay BIG taxes and the drunk drivers pay Big fines.
