Ferndale Police Chief Tim Collins said the city of Ferndale is a "very safe community" in an interview with WDET's Jerome Vaughn on May 31.

He also told the Detroit news station that crime has trended down for the past five years in Ferndale but some people assume the city is unsafe because it's on the Detroit border. Collins encouraged people to look at public crime statistics compared to nearby communities and said "you'd be surprised."

Collins also discussed other issues facing the police department and offered safety tips for residents. Listen to the full interview here.
