Thief Takes Laptop in Ferndale Home Invasion; Men Hit With Beer Bottle at Bar

The following highlights are from Ferndale Police Department reports from the week of Oct. 14.

Thief steals laptop, camera and drill

A thief broke into a home and stole a computer and other items while the resident was there on the 2300 block of Shevlin between 5-6 a.m. Oct. 17, according to a report.

The burglar entered through an unlocked bedroom and rummaged through the home and stole several items, including a Mac laptop, digital camera, wallet and drill, the report stated.

The theft reportedly took place while the resident was home asleep in a bedroom.

According to the report, the suspect took a lawn chair from a neighboring house and stood on it to get into the window. Hand marks were observed on the window and it appeared the suspect had gloves on.

Officers observed that a motion sensor light on the west side door was not working and discovered that the bulb was partially unscrewed.

A neighborhood check was conducted with negative results. The resident did not hear or observe the suspect, and no witnesses were located.

Men injured in assault at bar

Police found two men bleeding from their faces at The Bocsco around 1:36 a.m. on Oct. 20. The men told police they were assaulted inside the bar by an unknown man who had struck them in their faces with a beer bottle.

The suspect had fled the scene but was later arrested by officers during a traffic stop. The suspect was positively identified by the victim and was transported to the Ferndale Police Department for booking.

The suspect also sustained a laceration to his left eye during the fight and was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak for treatment.

Attempted home invasion

A resident reported a break-in on the 200 block of Romeo around 10:30 p.m. Oct. 19, but nothing was taken.

The resident had reportedly left the home at 7:30 a.m. with all doors and windows secured and returned home at 10:30 p.m. to found a crack on a bedroom window. Nothing was disturbed inside the home and nothing was stolen.

Officers observed a small hole (about one inch) on the outer pane of the glass. According to the report, the suspect removed the screen from the window, placed it against the garage, and tried to pry open one of the locks on the window. The home is surrounded by a privacy fence, which was not locked.

Power cord missing

A student stated that he left his Digital Learning Center backpack, which contained his HP power cord, in a classroom at the school when he went to lunch around 11:15 a.m. Oct. 18. When he returned around 4 p.m., his powercord was missing. There are no suspects.
