UPDATE: Ferndale Dollar Store Owner Fatally Shot at Shop

64-year-old owner of store shot multiple times, officials say. No suspects in custody.

The 64-year-old owner of the  store on Hilton Road was fatally shot Friday night, Ferndale police said.

The victim, who had not yet been identifed, was working alone at the time of the shooting, Ferndale Police Sgt. Patrick Jones said. "At this time we don't know if it was a robbery or not," Jones said.

The shooting took place at 9 p.m., according to police. The victim, whom the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office said was shot multiple times, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Sam Gumma, owner of the next door to the dollar store, said police were still at Dollar Club Plus investigating when Vega Market closed at 11 p.m. Friday.

"Now is not a time for stories," he said. "Now is a time for prayer and grieving. We have to pray for this horrible tragedy."

Candles were placed in front of the store's facade and prayer cards stuck in flowerpots near the doors.

"Police are investigating several leads," Jones said in an e-mail. "Police are asking that anyone who was in the area of Hilton and Woodward Heights on Friday night between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. to contact the Ferndale Police."
