Ferndale Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit by Car on Woodward

The woman died Tuesday morning after witnesses say she walked into the busy intersection at College Street against a red signal, according to a police report.

A 70-year-old woman died Tuesday morning after she was struck by a vehicle on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale.

Witnesses reported that shortly before 8:45 a.m. a Ferndale resident walked into the busy intersection of northbound Woodward at College Street against a red signal; several motorists narrowly missed hitting her before an 80-year-old North Carolina man driving a Buick struck her, according to a police report.

Officers who arrived at the scene performed first aide on the victim, who was unresponsive; the Ferndale Fire Department took her to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where she was pronounced dead, the report said.

Motorist Bradley MillerRoth said he was waiting in the left turn lane in front of the HoneyBaked Ham store on Woodward when the accident occurred to his right.

"A man that witnessed it helped out with directing the traffic while the police were on their way," MillerRoth said Tuesday via message on the Ferndale Patch Facebook page. "An older lady assisted the driver in calming him down and then the police arrived. The lady next to us must have seen more, as she was talking to the police. The police said we could go since we never saw the pedestrian initially."

The driver of the Buick was interviewed and released; alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash and no arrests were made, according to the police report.

"(It was) a very sad and horrible accident and my thoughts go out to the families involved," MillerRoth said.
