Ferndale Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident on Sunday

Police said the man was not wearing a helmet, the Detroit Free Press reports.

A Ferndale man died early Sunday morning after his motorcycle crashed in Oak Park, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The man, who has not been identified, was traveling on eastbound I-696 and crashed near Greenfield Road after he missed his exit and tried to cut across the pavement, according to the article.

Michigan State Police told the Free Press the man and his female passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. The man, who was not wearing a helmet, hit his head and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to the hospital for cuts and bruises.

Mayor expresses condolences

At Monday night's Ferndale City Council meeting, Mayor Dave Coulter expressed his condolences to the family of the 36-year-old Ferndale resident.

"I want his family to know our thoughts and prayers are with them," he said. "It's a terrible thing to happen."

Coulter encouraged residents to wear a helmet, even though .

"Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do something," he said. "I want to just encourage our residents who ride motorcycles to remember this tragic incident and maybe keep the helmet on even if you don't have to."

Darwinism at work here. It's a tragedy, but a great reminder of what can happen if you choose not to be cautious. It astounds me that any rider would -not- want to wear a helmet.

Few would disagree that wearing a helmet increases safety, but for many it also decreases the pleasure. Even in the best circumstances bungee jumping or sky diving is risky, yet I would disagree with any wanting to outlaw either.

I also would not want to outlaw the risky practices of skydiving or bungee jumping. But they also have safety requirements. As do occupants of vehicles. We are required to wear seatbelts. Which is seen by many as restricting or freedoms.

Good point, Les!
Michigan Auto Law June 27, 2012 at 09:09 pm
Mayor Coulter's advice is wise about motorcycle helmet use since the April 2012 repeal of Michigan's nearly 40-year-old, lifesaving motorcycle helmet law: "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do something." As reports from MLive are showing, injuries and deaths suffered by helmetless motorcyclists proportionately higher than those for motorcyclists wearing helmets. How many more motorcyclist injuries and deaths must occur before the hastily-passed and ill-advised motorcycle helmet law repeal is, itself, repealed?

The FESC is an important steward of the City’s environmental values and goals, and its membersRead More have performed valuable education programming and environmental policy support on behalf of all Ferndale residents. It was clear, however, the FESC and the city needed to revisit the mission and vision to make sure the group was focused on activities that could make the greatest impact. I worked with the FESC to brainstorm a new mission and purpose ideas with members and helped rewrite the draft ordinance in a collaborative effort with FESC and city staff. I'm happy to say we've made steady progress; last night the city manager and I met with FESC members to review the new ordinance language, and the group's renewel request will come to council on June 24th. Together, we had a great meeting and I believe FESC members are excited about the clearer alignment between FESC interests and the City’s environmental goals. Yes, it did take a bit longer than anticipated, but in the end I believe we'll have a stronger direction for FESC for years to come.

Here is a great idea: Let's not have the city automatically water its lawns after two days of rain.Read More That would save water, reduce costs, and not contribute to increased storm water runoff.
