Ferndale Home Invasion Suspect Arrested

The 22-year-old Ferndale man is suspected of breaking into an apartment in his complex and stealing a resident's computer and keys, police said.

arrested a man on Wednesday who is suspected of breaking into an apartment in his complex and stealing a computer and other items.

Paul Nicholas Proimos, 22, of Ferndale, was arraigned in on Thursday afternoon and charged with second-degree home invasion, a 15-year felony. Bond was set at $5,000.

On Wednesday, Ferndale Police investigated a report of an apartment that was burglarized on the 400 block of West Marshall. The suspect appeared to have entered through a window that faced a porch area common to multiple apartments.

The apartment resident told police he left for work in the morning and returned around 1 p.m. to find his computer, monitor and a set of keys missing, Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson said.

A witness in the apartment complex told police he saw Proimos outside of the apartment that day putting a computer into a pack. Police made contact with Proimos and arrested him the same day. Proimos admitted to the theft, Wilson said.

Police don't believe any other apartments in the complex were targeted. "It was probably just a crime of opportunity. He lives right there, saw the chance to do it and did it," Wilson said.

Police warn residents to lock windows

Although police haven't seen any increase in home invasions lately, Wilson reminds residents to be cautious about leaving windows open in the summer.

"[The resident] left the window unlocked, which made it a lot easier to get into," Wilson said. "When it's hot weather out people have a tendency to either leave the windows open or not lock them, but it's an invitation for some burglars to get in."
