Driver Eludes Police Twice, Arrested at Home

After fleeing Madison Heights and Ferndale police officers, the Hazel Park man was apprehended at home after his wife was seen in his truck and pointed officers to the suspect.

The driver of a red Chevy Sonoma pickup that eluded Ferndale and Madison Heights police officers in two separate chases on Monday was arraigned on charges of fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspected license in  in Ferndale on Wednesday afternoon.

David Alan Jones, 47, was eventually apprehended at his home in Hazel Park shortly after the two chases occurred when his wife was spotted in the vehicle and then directed police toward her husband, Ferndale Lt. Detective William Wilson said.

The incident started at around 4:20 p.m. Monday when the Madison Heights Police Department officers began chasing a red Chevy Sonoma truck. The truck had run a red light on John R and then refused to stop for the pursuing officers, Madison Heights Police told the Daily Tribune.

That chase was eventually terminated, yet officers were on the lookout for the vehicle, Wilson said. A Ferndale officer then spotted the truck, tried to stop it and it fled. Another chase began.

"The truck sped through streets in Ferndale and Hazel Park, ran red lights, avoided oncoming police cars, evaded some stop sticks thrown out by police, and drove recklessly through residential and business districts," Wilson said. "Due to the dangerousness of the pursuit, Ferndale terminated the chase."

The Hazel Park Police Department then spotted the same red Sonoma pickup at a gas station in Hazel Park. A woman was driving the truck this time.

"Officers approached her and she told them it was her husband who fled from the police," Wilson said. "Officers went to Jones’ home and arrested him."

Jones' bond was set at $25,000 and a pre-exam conference for 1 p.m. Jan. 12. Jones faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
