Did You Hear That Boom? Residents Report Saturday Night Sounds that Shook Homes

Police said they searched the area but couldn't confirm the cause of the noises. They said fireworks are a possibility.

Ferndale Police are investigating what might have caused three loud booms and light flashes that shook homes and concerned many local residents Saturday night.

The booms were heard around 9:30-10 p.m. and may have originated near the area of Hilton and Marshall. More than 40 people posted on Ferndale Patch's Facebook page about the incidents — describing flashes of light seen in the sky, their homes vibrating with the noise, and helicopters heard overheard following the sounds.

A Ferndale Police dispatcher said last night at 12:30 a.m. that they investigated the noise but could not find its cause. He said fireworks were a possibility.

Ferndale Police Lt. Casey O'Loughlin said Sunday morning that he was not aware of any reports made but said loud booms can be caused by fireworks.

"That's usually what loud booms turn out to be are fireworks," he said.

In Ferndale, any type of fireworks that explode or leave the ground are illegal, he said.

O'Loughlin said he was not aware of any helicopters being sent out.

Here's what some Patch readers had to say about the noise:

  • Agnes: I'm at W. Marshall and Pinecrest and we heard them. The first one shook my house too. I also heard low flying helicopters. Once, right before the first and loudest boom and then once again after the third "boom". I went outside a couple of times . . . but nothing seemed to be going on. I wonder what happened?
  • Cindy: There's absolutely no way those were fireworks to shake people's houses all over town, first of all...and, this is the 3rd or 4th time we've heard/felt some type of 'explosion' with absolutely no explanation from police at all. When/how are we going to get an answer!?
  • Chris: I was inside the New Way...didn't hear anything due to the music, but noticed a very bright flash of light out the window. It did not look like any fireworks I have ever seen...much brighter.
  • Melissa: I was at the stop spot on 9 mile we saw the sky light up three times. It looked like lightening, twice south of 9 once north of 9 the booms followed. It absolutely did not sound like fireworks.

My husband & I were at the Magic Bag seeing Echoes of Pink Floyd. I was in the ladies room & heard a loud boom. At first i thought it was the bands sound effects but soon realized it had to be something bigger. I didn't think of it again until I saw a video about it.

Excellent! It was an evening of rampant imagination (I was thinking the opening scene of Jurassic Park 2) and texting friends in an attempt to triangulate the location of "The booms." Seriously. And if Theatre Bizarre had to go out, I'm glad it went out with confusing explosions that were visible and audible for miles.

where is the video?

This is the most embarrassing section of comments I've ever seen. Since the Theatre Bizarre explanation seems the most plausible, has anyone actually attempted to verify it? I'm sure our neighbors on State Fair might not give us the FULL version of events (as I'm guessing blowing up the main stage - if that's actually what happened - wasn't quite legal), but I'm sure it would be an entertaining version of events. Maybe it could bring a few people peace, since apparently some of my neighbors are waiting for a sonic boom to spring them into the afterlife.

But Katy, It was ghosts or dinosaurs. Or both. They had a fight.

The deceased and the extinct...I can buy that. They have a lot to be irritable about.

Zombo shook and made Ferndale shake. A fitting last hurrah. Don't worry kids, Zombo might be gone, but you'll still see him in your nightmares!

Im not sure what the booms were, and Im not here to get in to that. I am curious about the Theatre Bizarre stage. What did they do that night that could be heard all the way in Madison Heights?

I live on Bennett St. and Fair St. My living room faces 8 mile and the State Fair Grounds. I am so close to the road, I literally have no back yard. When I heard and felt the booms, my first thought was that it came from the SFGs or someone had yet again set fire to one of the the dilapidated houses behind the grounds (by Theatre Bizarre) and a gas line exploded. I also wondered if a car had exploded on 8 mile. I starred out the window for a while and saw nothing. Traffic flowed normally. I dont think it came from Theatre Bizarre. It is not uncommon to hear the helicopters flying over this area and often times the spotlight shines as well. I was surprised to learn the neighborhoods north witnessed the helicopter as well. I dont know what I believe, but I dont think it was the Theatre.

Its a about gravitational force. The sun and planets revolve around the earth... we know now the planets revolve around the sun. The earth is flat... we know it is round. Are we originally part of the Milkyway galaxy or from a dwarf galaxy? For every action there is a reaction. http://viewzone2.com/milkywayx.html http://io9.com/5840017/the-milky-ways-arms-are-splayed-in-response-to-a-punch-from-another-galaxy

I wondered what the shaking of my house and bed was with the boom sound also. I did not get up to look to see or hear helicopters. I am near Pinecrest and 9 Mile. So whatever it was was heard and felt and seen for quite a distance and in many areas.

You are correct. And my re-action to you is pure unadulterated laughter.

I heard 2 of the booms.....about 15 minutes apart....the first book I heard (and felt the sonic wave) near Blockbuster at 9 & Livernois. The second I heard and seen the flash while traveling southbound on Woodward. It did appear to be in the direction of Marshall and Hilton or the Railyard area....did NOT sound like fireworks....and I am 99.99999% sure it was not an intergalactic dogfight, UFO's, good vs bad aliens or low flying supersonic military aircraft. It certainly was interesting however....I have been in war and have not seen anything quite the same....

My first thought was fracking, there is a oil/gas injection well in Ferndale. Which still doesn't explain the flash of light. here's the state's map: http://www.michigan.gov/cgi/0,4548,7-158-52927_53037_12540_13818-30992--,00.html
