Crime Briefs: Text Messaging Fight, Jewelry Thefts and Burglary in Ferndale

Ferndale Police responded to incidents including a burglary at a party store over the weekend in which police were able to trace dye-colored footprints in the snow to the suspect.

Following is a roundup of recent police incidents in Ferndale:

Ferndale woman charged in thefts

A Ferndale woman was scheduled to be in Ferndale's at 1 p.m. today for a preliminary hearing on larceny charges stemming from the alleged theft of jewelry from local women, the Daily Tribune reported.

Dana Dingman, 38, is suspected of stealing jewelry and cash from three different women who let her stay at their homes, then cheating a cab driver out of an $82 fare after he drove her to pawn shops, Ferndale Police told the newspaper.

Man runs truck over curb after text messaging fight

In Ferndale over the weekend, police say an argument via text messaging between a Warren man and his ex-girlfriend may have prompted the man to drive his pickup over a curb, nearly striking his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, her younger sister and another girl, according to a Daily Tribune report.

David Vanarsdol, 18, was arraigned Monday on felony assault charges before 43rd District Court Judge Joseph Longo. Vanarsdol was jailed on a $5,000 bond and a pre-exam conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. today.

Dye from shoes leads police to burglary suspect

Police said leaking dye from a pair of wet Nike gym shoes is what led them to a suspected burglar over the weekend, according to an article in the Daily Tribune.

Cornelius Maddox, 43, of Detroit was in jail on a $25,000 cash bond after being arraigned Monday in Ferndale 43rd District Court.

“We found a Nike footprint near the fire hydrant leaking a red dye material that left marks in the snow,” Ferndale Detective Paul Simpson told the Daily Tribune. “We followed those marks and the footprints from the tennis shoes.”

Maddox is scheduled for pre-exam conference at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 at Ferndale District Court.
