'Click It or Ticket' Campaign Continues Through Holiday Weekend

Law enforcement agencies will be looking for motorists who aren't buckled up during the "Click It or Ticket" campaign that runs through June 3.

As travel heats up over Memorial Day weekend, the annual Click It or Ticket campaign continues through June 3.

Officers from 160 Michigan law enforcement agencies will work to enforce the state's seat belt law, which requires all drivers, as well as passengers in the front seat or who are 15 or younger, to buckle up.

"Michigan has a primary seat belt law, which means law enforcement can stop and ticket motorists solely for not being buckled up," according to the Michigan State Police website.

In 2011, seat belt use dropped to 94.5 percent, down from the high of 97.9 percent in 2009, according to Michigan State Police.

"The holiday is fast approaching so we are encouraging people to drive safely and ensure everyone is buckled up," Michael L. Prince, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, said in a news release.

Last year, nine people died over the Memorial Day holiday period. Of those, three were not wearing a seat belt, according to Michigan State Police.

Children must be in a car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall.
