Ferndale Public Library Staff Recommends: Cecelia Shares Eclectic Summer Picks

Cecelia Foley's suggestions include a West Coast-splashed garage-pop CD, vegan cookbook and more.

This article was written by Jeff Milo and Cecelia Foley.

Welcome back to our weekly round-up of staff recommendations from the Ferndale Public Library!

This is the third time around for Ferndale Public Library Page Cecelia Foley when it comes to humbly recommending a few reads, listens or viewings to the community. Our soon-to-be-junior at Royal Oak High School (a Ferndale resident, albeit), is spending her summer with some cinematic neo-torch ballads via British soul singers and rocking out to some West Coast-splashed garage-pop. She’s also got a few recipes to recommend.

Cecelia’s Picks

Lana Del Rey: Born to Die
CD - REY

I have listened to this entire cd at least 20 times all the way through, and I am still not tired of it. Lana's voice is so soothing and rich, and the music has the sort of effect on you that just makes you feel cool and important. It's perfect to listen to on a rainy day or at night.

Into the Wild
By Jon Krakauer
BIO - MCCANDLESS

This book had a big effect on me; its about a nineteen-year-old guy, Chris McCandless, who has a severe case of wanderlust. Once he graduates college, he burns his money and leaves with nothing but his car and a 10 pound bag of rice on the adventure of a lifetime. Jon Krakauer does a great job at describing all of the scenery and getting inside McCandless' head. The book can get a bit intense at times, but it leaves you with a greater appreciation for nature and for the idea of staying true to yourself.

Wavves: King of the Beach
CD - WAVVES

Punk mixed with surf music mixed with some indie stuff, Wavves produces some interesting and fun tunes. King of the Beach is probably my favorite song off of the album, it just makes me want to go to the beach and dance! Sometimes the lyrics are a little sad but they're hidden well with the catchy baselines and upbeat drum rhythms. Their new album "Afraid of Heights" is really good as well.

The 30 Minute Vegan
By Mark Reinfeld and Jennifer Murray (cookbook)
641.5636 R

As a new-ish vegan (about 5 months) this book has helped me out a lot. It gives many fast and simple recipes, as well as ideas to store in the back of your head, like using nutritional yeast as a substitute for cheese, or making your own rice/nut milk instead of buying it at the store. I would recommend this book to a new vegan or anyone looking to get more vegetables and plant-based proteins into their diet. My only problem with the book is that there aren't many pictures in it, but with the simplicity of the recipes pictures are not totally necessary.
