Ferndale Public Library and Loving Touch to Host Benefit Concert

Money raised at Aug. 3 concert will benefit the library.

This article was written by Jeff Milo.

Greetings from between the stacks at your local library, with newly-hired staffer Jordan Wright (from Youth Services in our Kids Corner) joining me in our music section, shelving through some recent additions to the CD collection.

Jordan and I were bummed to hear about the budget cuts forced from declining tax revenue for the fiscal year 2014, particularly the hit that our collection development would take (20% reduction to books and 15% to movies and music). These new CD’s we were shuffling through would start to pare down in the months ahead, which was particularly deflating for both of us – as I am freelance music journalist and Jordan’s a musician, himself, recording and performing with local indie-rock outfit Due North.

Well, a month ago, with endearing aims towards bolstering some support for the library, Jordan suggested a Benefit Concert.

The Library’s made plenty of friends in the music community, thanks considerably to the regular monthly local music showcase (First Stop Fridays –spearheaded by Circulation Director Kelly Bennett). With three years’ worth of engaging and spotlighting local music talent inside the library, we’ve expanded into special Summer Concert series and even joined the Metro Times Blowout (2013) as a participating host-venue.

So Jordan and I were certain we wouldn’t have trouble tapping on a few shoulders to come sing out their support for the Library – especially when the Loving Touch could provide us with a professionally equipped stage with superior light and sound systems. For us, throwing a concert just seemed like the best way to assure we keep bringing in new books, movies and music releases for our patrons to borrow.
