Community Corner

Ferndale Library Lists (New Suggestions from the Library Board)

Welcome back to another round of recommendations supplied by the staff of your local Library.

Usually a librarian, or a page, or a circulation specialist would be providing you some suggestions on "what to read next..." BUT...This week, we're switching it up a bit, and giving the Patch Picks floor to Judeen Bartos, from our Board of Trustees. Bartos has lived in Ferndale since 2001 and has served on our Board since February 2011. "Safeguarding this community gem is my top priority," Bartos recently told Citizens For A Fair Ferndale, on her way to her recent reelection to the board, in this month's elections.

Bartos:
Discussions about motivation and achievement have always intrigued me. What is the secret behind the success of some individuals, businesses, or schools? And why do others who may appear equally talented never seem to reach their full potential? Thousands of pages have been written on this topic but the three books below are among my favorites. They have not only been informative but have had a profound impact on my own life perspective.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

By Carol S. Dweck
Non Fic: 153.8  D

Two mindsets - fixed and growth. Dr. Carol S. Dweck asserts that our attitudes about what success means deeply affect our levels of happiness and fulfillment. Using public figures such as Lee Iaccoca and John McEnroe, Dweck shows how real self-confidence has little to do with the outward appearances of success. She also demonstrates how having a growth mindset is far more important than talent or intelligence.

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

By Daniel H. Pink
Non fic: 153  P

In the same vein as Carol Dweck, Daniel Pink offers his provocative ideas on what motivates people to excel. He argues that passion, autonomy and self-satisfaction - intrinsic rewards - are more important than extrinsic recognition such as promotions, good grades, or raises. Pink's insightful observations will compel you to reflect on what truly motivates you. He is the author of several books, including 'A Whole New Mind' - another book I also highly recommend!

Raising Resilient Children: Fostering Strength, Hope, and Optimism in your Child

By Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein
Non fic: 649.1  B

Resilience is as integral a part of achievement and fulfillment as motivation and a growth mindset. The ability to bounce back from adversity is crucial for us all, but especially essential for children. Brooks and Goldstein offer parents thoughtful advice on avoiding negative scripts and parenting with empathy and respect. Nurturing their strengths rather than focusing on their weaknesses can make a tremendous difference in helping children handle obstacles head on, say Brooks and Goldstein, who are both child psychologists.

CD/DVD: All I want for Christmas

By: Straight No Chaser

Straight No Chaser is an all male a Capella group that was originally made up of Indiana University students. The group which began singing together as students has reassembled and is not at all what you would expect when you think of a capella! My favorite CD is 'All I want for Christmas', a set that combines music from previous holiday focused CDs along with a DVD of a live performance. If you are looking for a new spin on traditional holiday music, SNC is a refreshing and uplifting addition to your holiday collection.
