Open Letter to City and School Board

I appreciate the open letter.  I have my own open letter to the school board, city council, Stephanie Hall, police chief, DLC and other Ferndale high school administrators.  I mean this letter with nothing but respect because I care about Ferndale and what happens in it.  I write this letter because I grew up in Ferndale, still live here, love it, but am debating packing up my family and leaving.
I appreciate the increased steps you have taken to ensure safety of the students and staff at the DLC.  Unfortunately I do not feel that our concerns have been taken seriously.  Our concerns are brought up by various community members at practically each school board and city council meeting.  We are met with canned answers such as the following (which are also in the letter above): these things happen at every school, it is no worse than at any other school, we are taking measures to ensure safety, etc.
Yet the incidents keep happening.  There have now been 9 students arrested at the school for various incidents so far this year - meaning within the last 3 weeks.  I looked at the Ferndale Police website and checked out the crime reports for last year.  Each month during the last school year there was an assault reported at the corner of the DLC.  This was not the case in any other area in Ferndale, including the other high schools.
I for one am tired of being told that this is "normal high school stuff" and "not to worry" and "it's being taken care of".  We all know there have been multiple incidents in the past as well.  I no longer want canned answers, or cleverly worded phrases that gloss over the severity of what is happening.  For instance, Stephanie Hall was quoted in an article regarding the recent fights at DLC as saying it was an unusual event as no arrests for fights that had happened at the school so far this year.  True.  But we're only three weeks into the school year.  And we know there were plenty of fights the year prior, including ones that spilled out into the parking lots.  There have been incidents with guns being pulled out at the school, knives, robberies, etc.
I would like facts.  I would like to have a special meeting to discuss the following points regarding last school year and the current school year:
1) How many times were police called to each high school
2) How many fights occured at each school
3) How many incidents occured at each school involving a gun or knife
4) How many arrests have occured at each school, or arrests of students near the school/at related school events, etc
5) What are the crime rates around the DLC vs the other high schools?
6) How does the current crime rate around the DLC compare to what it was like prior to becoming an alternative learning center?
I would also like to be able to address financial issues of the school system.  There is a general feeling that the major reason the DLC exists is to bring in revenue.  Of course Ferndale has a history of alternative/adult ed, and of course it is a good thing to do, and of course we know that there are some good kids there, and that regardless everyone deserves a chance; but no one is buying that it is for purely altruistic reasons why the DLC exists.
I want real answers as to what profit we are making from the DLC and what fraction of the overall revenue for the school system comes the DLC.  I also want to know what is planned for the future, how much does the city plan to expand the DLC, how portion of overall school system revenue do we plan to get from the DLC?  Basically, how vital is it to the budget, and how vital do we plan on making it?
And this a little off topic, but still connected, but I would like real HONEST answers regarding Gary Meiers contract.  I, as well as many others, feel it is a conflict of interest that he should be allowed to use Ferndale school district employees to perform work for his outside consulting firm which does work for Michigan Future (which helps develop charter schools).  He pockets $180,000 of a total $370,000 for the work done (he uses Ferndale school employees by the way), the other $190,000 goes to Ferndale school.  If Ferndale school employees are doing all the work, why does he get to keep any of the money?  It should all go to Ferndale.  Cut out the middle man, the very expensive middle man who is already very well paid while Ferndale teachers are among the lowest paid in the county and five lost their jobs just recently.  Also, with the superintendant doing side work in support of charter schools one cannot help but think this may impact our decision to retain/expand charter schools in our district.
I would appreciate a full honest conversation regarding the above issues.  If that could be arranged within the next month or two I would be very grateful.
