Little Surprises Keep Life Fun, Says Newly-Engaged Ferndale Couple

Ferndale has its fair share of lovebirds, so we decided to check in with a few of them before Valentine's Day and ask them to share relationship and date night secrets.

Today, we take a closer look at what makes Ferndale residents Sarah Kahn and Sam Bennett so sweet. Sam proposed to Sarah on Jan. 26 at Campus Martius and they are planning a Spring 2014 wedding. "I could not possibly be any more excited!!" Sarah writes.

How long have you been together?

We have been together for about 3 years – we met while working at J. Crew and consider the store manager who hired us both to be our "matchmaker"!

What’s the secret to a successful and happy relationship?

For us, laughter really is the best medicine. Sam is teaching me that it is perfectly fine to take life lightly and laugh when things get tricky. We are also very into surprising each other with little treats like flowers, baked goods, a kitten named Wrigley (BEST surprise) & brushing snow off the cars in the morning. They keep life fun! 

What famous couple would you compare yourselves to?

Sam reminds me very much of Ryan Gosling – handsome, stylish and polite. (You're welcome, babe)

Why did you settle in Ferndale, and how long have you lived here?

We have lived in Ferndale for about a year and a half. We love that it is a small, vivacious, walkable & green community with lots of shops, restaurants and friendly people. We also love living in a community that is so diverse and accepting.

What’s your favorite romantic night out in Ferndale and why?

In the summer, we love walking to Torino and having a late, light dinner outside with a few cocktails. Another favorite is Local Kitchen & Bar -  the cozy, comfortable atmosphere & big fireplace make for the perfect setting on a snowy winter evening.
