Moving into Ferndale

Hi!  My boyfriend and I are looking to move to the Ferndale area.  We have been looking south of 9 Mile and West of Woodward.  How far South can we look while still staying in a safe neighborhood? Are there any neighborhoods that you would not recommend us moving to? Is the area South of Machpelah Cemetery nice?
