Yours Truly stopped by Crispelli's Bakery & Pizzeria in Berkley last week to try out the restaurant's new breakfast offerings and left with a full belly and happy taste buds.
Crispelli's puts an interesting twist on morning fare, serving three types of calzones (feta, spinach and tomato; three-meat and egg; corned beef and potatoes), eggs gratin and a smoked salmon plate, among other offerings.

Yours Truly ordered the Prosciutto & Egg Gratin, Belgian Waffles and a cafe au lait made with brew from The Great Lakes Coffee Brewing Company, all for less than $15.
The Prosciutto & Egg Gratin was made with the title ingredients, as well as mozzarella cheese, in a perfectly portioned savory pastry cup. A surprising hint of lemon nicely cut the salty flavor of the prosciutto.
The Belgian Waffles were dusted with powdered sugar and came with warm syrup. The serving size was less intimidating than suggested by the menu, which promises four waffles. Each waffle was approximately three inches in diameter, making for a reasonable portion. Diners can add fresh berries or warm berry compote for $2.
Both dishes were served with grapes and an orange wedge on the side.
Yours Truly received friendly and prompt service and enjoyed the restaurant's music choices, which included folksy tunes by The Avett Brothers and Wilco.
Crispelli's was nearly empty early Friday morning, save for Royal Oak residents Amanda and Brian McNeff, the latter whose uncles Joe and Kenny Morelli are co-owners of the restaurant.
"We ended up splitting a three-meat calzone and the French toast," Amanda McNeff said. "The calzones were great because you can take them to go and they make it fresh, so it's not sitting around.
"The French toast is almost like a treat," she said. "They put in nutmeg and it's soaked overnight. It's full of flavor, moist."
She said the couple's tab came to approximately $12.
Crispelli's – known for its gourmet pizzas and popular patios – also serves lunch and dinner. Breakfast is available from 7-11 a.m. seven days a week, with offerings that range from $2 to $7.
