Getting to Know Me and My TV Habits

Introducing myself as a new blogger for the Ferndale patch. I'm a gal who spends an inordinate amount of time watching TV and movies. Hello to my fellow Ferndale friends,

I have been given the exciting opportunity to blog on Ferndale Patch. My personal specialty is TV, movies and pop culture in general. I hope to bring you updates and reviews on new things going on both the silver and small screens.

First a little background on myself. I'm new to the area. I've spent the last eight years in Grand Rapids. I studied illustration at both College for Creative Studies in Detroit and Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. Alas, I am an art school dropout. Life has carried me to this town. I never really loved a city until I moved to Ferndale in February. I feel a sense of community here and I am actually proud to live here! There are so many interesting businesses and events, such as Treat Dreams and Pig & Whiskey. My personal favorite Ferndale restaurant is Howe's Bayou.

But I've got a case of "the social anxiety," so I don't go out as often as I would like. It's unfortunate, but allows me to watch more TV and movies than you would think is humanly possible. I'm hoping that my blog posts will give you an insight into the wonderful world inside of a Ferndale home. I try to make it out to as many things as I can muster and afford at the same time. I will report back my experiences as a Ferndale newbie who is still bewildered by the culture of this wonderful city.

As a self-proclaimed film and TV buff, I should probably give you some of my favorites for credibility purposes. A movie doesn't have to be Oscar-worthy for me to enjoy it. I have an extremely wide range of interests. I love almost all Christopher Guest (A Mighty Wind, Best In Show) and Wes Anderson (Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums) films, the Rocky saga and The Hangover. I liked the hilarity of Jackass 3D just as much as eloquence of Black Swan. Currently I can watch The 40-Year-Old Virgin on a loop while never getting sick of it.

A few of my favorite TV shows are Roseanne, Arrested Development, Bones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I Love Lucy, The Shield, Strangers with Candy, Xena: Warrior Princess, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I actually named my dog Deandra "Sweet Dee" Reynolds after the character from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I recently fell in love with How I Met Your Mother and Modern Family. I also watch quite a bit of embarrassing reality TV, but I will spare you the details. I am always on the lookout for more shows to watch and movies to enjoy.

When it comes to certain movies, I can be quite the sobber. Peter Jackson's King Kong never fails to bring me to big ol' crocodile tears. My boyfriend Vance has a quite mean trick that he plays on me. As I cry, he will ask "Why is it sad? I just don't get it." In my vulnerable moment, I will explain "King Kong was so alone he was the last of his kind and he was taken from his home and treated poorly in a place where he was scared and confused!" I almost never remember that Vance does not care why the movie was sad. He likes my in depth explanations, which causes me to cry more. I have to say, it would be pretty funny... if I weren't the one crying.

I hope to bring some exciting news and recommendations soon.

I'd love to hear any ideas for movies, TV shows and especially places to visit within the community. Don't get me wrong, the people at the McDonald's window are nice, but I could certainly mix it up. In the meantime, maybe I'll catch you around town sometime. I actually own a dog stroller. My Maltese has some physical limitations, but I still enjoy her company when I'm out. If you see a girl with asymmetrical hair and an arm tattoo jogging with a little white dog in a stroller, chances are that it's me. Feel free to say hi.
