Check It Out! Ferndale Library News for August/September - "Geek The Library"

A new column in which the staff at the Ferndale Public Library lets you in on what's going on: new books, new programs, new hours!

Your local Library staff are getting in touch with their inner-GEEK! We're all embracing the things we're passionate about: Reference Librarian Ed Burns geeks 70's Cinema while Circulation Specialist Lindsey Harnish geeks Nature. My father's starting to geek organic food while my mom geeks suspense novels.

Whoever you are and whatever it is you're passionate about--Whatever it is that you geek-- the Library supports you!

On September 15, amid the excitement of the DIY Street Fair, the Ferndale Public Library will be kicking off its participation in a national public awareness campaign: Geek The Library! We want to hear from you - What do you Geek? And how can we help you in your respective Geek pursuits/studies/investments/investigations/entertainment.

Find out what's happening in Ferndalewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Stop in to the Library between 12-4 pm and peruse our Geek station. Declare what you Geek and get a personalized button! (Hey, you can even get a temporary Geek tattoo to show off for the rest of your DIY-festivities).

This campaign, sponsored by OCLC, a nonprofit library cooperative working to further the world's access to information, aims to start a a conversation about the valuable role public libraries play in their communities and underline their urgent need for increased support, particularly in tough economic times.

Serious or fun, whatever you geek, we support you. But we also want to keep in mind the critical funding issues many U.S. public libraries face. As GeekTheLibrary.org puts it: "Turn your passion into support!"

We're a digital connection station, an access hub, a job-hunter's starting-gate, a meeting-place for community groups, non-profits, entreprenuers, entertainers, event-planners, we're a key supplier for school research projects, a quiet place for meditation, an enabler for that new addiction of yours be it True Blood or Fifty Shades of Grey, or, if you dig really deep down the aisles, a source of enlightenment upon literary history, political biographies or compilations of classical music.

We're the place to go! What do you need? What do you Geek? Let's talk about that! How have we helped you or how can we help you further?

See you at DIY Street Fair!

September: Michigan Reads (9/5)

The Library of Michigan recently announced that it's 2012 Michigan Reads! -book is Moose on the Loose by Kathy-jo Wargin and all-month long Librarians at our Kids Corner desk will read the book to young patrons-upon-request.

Michigan Reads is a statewide literacy campaign, launched in 2004 to promote the value and benefits of reading early and often to preschoolers; encourage family bonding through reading; and to increase awareness and usage of Michigan's libraries. (Michigan Reads! is a program of the Library of Michigan and the Library of Michigan Foundation sponsored by Target.)

We'll also read it on September 5 at Toddler Storytime (10:30 am for ages 2 and 3) and Preschool Storytime (6:30 pm for ages 4 and 5).
