Ferndale Offers Free parking on Thanksgiving and Black Friday

A request was made at Monday's city council meeting to extend free parking on Small Business Saturday, the day that celebrates and recognizes the importance of buying local and supporting our Michigan-based merchants. A decision hasn't been made yet

The City of Ferndale is offering free parking on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday in the downtown area.

All city parking facilities will offer free parking beginning at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and ending at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov . 30.

The City Manager’s Office says offering free parking on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday is a way to express appreciation for people using the facilities throughout the year.

The free parking days follow the Michigan state law, which declares both Thanksgiving and the day after as official holidays, said Joseph Gacioch, chief innovation officer for the city of Ferndale.

He said a decision will be made yet this week on whether to extend the free parking through business hours on Nov. 30, which marks what has come to be known as Small Business Saturday. A request was made at Monday's city council meeting to extend the courtesy on Small Business Saturday, the  day that celebrates and recognizes the importance of buying local and supporting our Michigan-based merchants.
