'80s Prom: Why It Looks Rad

Ferndale Public Library is hosting '80s Prom on Oct. 15. In my opinion it's going to be rad for four reasons.

Fall is here, in full swing.

Trees have changed, flip-flops have begun to be put away, and on some Friday nights the light murmur of cheers comes from Ferndale High School’s football field with each Eagles touchdown.

In the hallways of the school I’m sure the buzz of school dances are ramping up students to pick out what to wear, where to eat, and who to go with. It’s a sweet sorta place to be, and you can have those good old feeling to.

In my opinion, it’s going to be rad for four reasons:

Find out what's happening in Ferndalewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

1. I did not go to my prom: Of course this has not hindered major aspects of my life, nor has it kept me from first kisses, romantic encounters, or awkwardly slow dancing. However, seeing as I was born in the '80s I didn’t have the chance to do those things dressed as my favorite Barbie and listening to Billy Idol.

Of course I won’t really look like Barbie. I’ll look like Molly Ringwald before she starts working out to Richard Simons. Still mint, if I do say so myself.

By attending '80s prom, I get to say that my experience of prom was just like a John Hughes movie.

Check that off of the bucket list.

2. Relive the '80s ... or just live the '80s: As I was born in the mid-ish '80s, and not living in the Jersey area, I haven’t had the chance to go out where the colors are always glow in the dark, bangs that make me two inches taller, or use words like “bodacious” without fearing being shunned.

Fear no more. For Oct. 15 is the time wrap back to this era. "Eat my shorts" 2011 at least for one evening.

Come on, we’ve all been flirting with the '80s ever since leggings came back into fashion. Give in. Pick up some '80s attire at Mother Fletchers. Sure you aren’t going to look your best in the neon pink tube dress. But the '80s isn’t about looking good; they’re about feeling good.

3. Practice for Halloween: October is famous for one major holiday and it comes at the very end of the month, that day is Halloween. Many people wait 364 days for it. If not to dress up themselves but to see what others will dress as.

Although we are coming ever so close to the night of tricks and treats, we still have sometime to wait. I ask, why wait?

Dress up on Oct. 15. Get into character Oct. 15. Do the monster mash Oct. 15.

Even if you don’t buy into the Prom bit, it’s a theme party in October. A custom/theme party where you don’t have to worry about getting fake blood on you, although you might want to be careful about the make-up. I’m an autumn, and those colors are bold.

4. I’m hoping I get to use the phrase “don’t you forget about me” in casual conversation.

Those are just my four reasons for wanting to layer lace, chiffon flowers, and some sequins, picking up a ticket and finally choosing Ducky over whatever the other guy’s name was.

Whatever your reasons are, get on it fast. Aside from the fun, the proceeds go to the Ferndale Public Library’s teen books and services.

Look! A rhythmic ceremonial ritual coming!
