Nutritional Tips for Enjoying a Slim Super Bowl

Get some tips on how to enjoy the Super Bowl the healthy way!

Super Bowl Sunday is a special day for many Americans. It not only provides us the opportunity to get together with friends and family, but to many people it is an excuse to indulge in the unhealthy food and drink.  Research has shown that the average American doubles their consumption of snack foods during the Super Bowl. And we’re not talking just any snacks; we’re talking specifically unhealthy snacks like chips, chicken wings, pizza, and other fatty foods.

Here are some tips to help you deal with the Super Bowl deluge:

  1. Be ready, plan ahead, and serve some healthy snack alternatives for your next Super Bowl party.  Healthy snack foods could include whole wheat low fat pretzels or parmesan topped toasted pita chips (whole wheat would be even BETTER).  Your guests might enjoy hot out-of-the oven kale chips.  They are thin, crispy, and delicious just like potato chips, but with a healthy bonus: these crispy greens are packed with Vitamins A and C.  If you send me an e-mail (Gail@GailPosner.com) with the words “Super Bowl Snack” in the subject line, I will send you the recipe.
  2. Many of my clients need a good dip to go with the ( baked low fat) chips.  Salsa is fat free, low in calories, and loaded with vitamins and minerals.  For variety, you can mix some fat-free Greek yogurt with hummus or avocado, or add seasonings to the yogurt, such as dill or hot sauce.
  3. Pizza is another “must” during Super Bowl, but offer a healthier version by using whole wheat pizza dough.  You can use less cheese and generous amounts of low-fat toppings such as mushrooms, tomatoes, and chicken. You can also cut down the fat and calories by using a low-fat, part-skim cheese.
  4. Last, but not least, you may want a dessert to top it all off. Offer a fresh fruit option.  If you’re hosting the party and want to serve a high calorie dessert, select one that will not tempt you.  If you Do offer less healthy alternatives, agree with yourself in advance to only have a small piece and be sure to give away ALL the leftovers.

So, for all you football lovers out there that are trying to enjoy a slim Super Bowl night, remember that you don’t have to deprive yourself of delicious snacks to stay healthy.  Just a few alterations to your favorite recipes or purchasing healthier options can make a big difference in the nutritional value.  Some of these healthy ideas for your Super Bowl might score a touchdown with your friends and family!

The FESC is an important steward of the City’s environmental values and goals, and its membersRead More have performed valuable education programming and environmental policy support on behalf of all Ferndale residents. It was clear, however, the FESC and the city needed to revisit the mission and vision to make sure the group was focused on activities that could make the greatest impact. I worked with the FESC to brainstorm a new mission and purpose ideas with members and helped rewrite the draft ordinance in a collaborative effort with FESC and city staff. I'm happy to say we've made steady progress; last night the city manager and I met with FESC members to review the new ordinance language, and the group's renewel request will come to council on June 24th. Together, we had a great meeting and I believe FESC members are excited about the clearer alignment between FESC interests and the City’s environmental goals. Yes, it did take a bit longer than anticipated, but in the end I believe we'll have a stronger direction for FESC for years to come.
