Weekend Planner: Say Goodbye to Ferndale Patch's Editor

Have you enjoyed having Terry Parris Jr. as your editor? Come and thank him tonight. Then, enjoy some other Ferndale greats and a chance to give back this weekend.

To kick off your weekend, stop by a very special going away party for Terry Parris Jr., who is  and moving to northern California's East Bay area. Stop by  for a handshake or hug and wish Terry well on his new assignment.

  • Why go: Terry is inviting anyone who wants to come out to say hi (if you've never met) or bye (if you're old friends) before he leaves for a new adventure in northern California. "Since my job was equal parts reporter and community member, it's important that I invite you all out for one last handshake or hug," he says.

  • Day one: The 18th annual Anti-Freeze Blues Festival, benefiting the Detroit Blues Society, kicks off with a very special homecoming from James Montgomery. Besides fronting his own band, James has been the bandleader for Johnny Winter for many years. James has also played with a who’s who of top notch bluesmen (and women) including: B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Jr. Wells, James Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman and Laverne Baker. Backing James for the show will be Jim McCarty and Friends. Be sure to get here early as Laith Al-Saadi, Pazman’s Super Session (featuring Jeanne & The Dreams) & The Difficulties round out the evening.  
  • Day two: The second night of the festival features Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. The Reverend and his band will be digging out tunes from their latest CD, Peyton On Patton, which is a tribute to the legendary blues guitarist Charlie Patton. Thornetta Davis (Detroit's own blues diva), Johnnie Bassett and The Rattlesnake Shake (a Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac tribute) kick off the show. Proceeds also benefit the Detroit Blues Society.

  • Why go: Brooke Mallon introduces Nia, a dynamic blend of dance arts (Jazz dance), martial arts (Tai Chi), and healing arts (Yoga) at the Rust Belt Market this weekend. Mallon teaches Nia at Body and Mind Fitness in Ferndale. Join Valencia Hamilton at 3 p.m., as she steps up the tempo with Zumba. At 6 p.m., Buford Gene Collins, also known as Mistalocks, gets couples dancing with Chicago Style Steppin'.
