Valentine's Day in Ferndale: Love is in the Air

Residents go out for last-minute Valentine's Day touches.

Valentine’s Day is here and love is in the air, especially in Ferndale. With shops like the , and (you can’t leave out the florist!), how could cupid not call Ferndale home?

“We usually close on Mondays ‘cause of wintertime, but my wife said ‘We have to be open on Valentine’s Day,'” said John DeJaeghere, 45, co-owner of Woodward Avenue Candy Shop. DeJaeghere said the shop has sold a lot of candy bars and Valentine's Day cupcakes.

On West Nine Mile Road, Just 4 Us, a novelty shop that caters to the gay community, owner Kevin Rogers, 53, has seen people filter in and out all day. He said he’s place has been visited mostly by people making sure not to go home without something to give to their loved one.

“Candies, cards, lots of practical things for this time of year,” he said.

What about the romance?

Frequent downtown Ferndale patron Jayme Barouch, 29, of West Bloomfield said he doesn’t need Valentine’s Day to be romantic, but for those who do need an excuses, Valentine’s Day is perfect.

“If you need an excuse to have a date night and get romantic, Valentine's is a great excuse to do that,” he said. “I’m doing Valentine’s Day on Wednesday actually; tonight I am just relaxing.”

Crystal Jolly, 22, is anticipating a romantic evening tonight for Valentine’s Day. For her, love isn’t just about receiving, it’s about giving. “You have to give love in order to receive love,” she said. “Love is about leaving your selfishness at home and compromise, it should make you feel good”

What about roses?

What’s Valentine’s Day without a bouquet of flowers?

“As usual, the No. 1 leader on Valentine’s Day is red roses,” said Jerome Raska, 52, of Blumz… by J.R. Designs. “We have been very steady all day, with people who want to show they remembered ...

“Red is and always will be the symbol of love.”
