The Way We Work: How Long Is Your Commute, Ferndale?

We take a look at how long Ferndale residents are traveling when they go to work and where they're going.

How long does it take you to get to work?

According to a statistical report of commutes by The Business Journals, the largest percentage of Ferndale commuters — 47.68 percent — travels 15-29 minutes during their daily commute.

Ferndale came in 1,576th among 3,012 communities nationwide with populations between 10,000 and 50,000, according to the report. The study awarded points for all commuters who traveled less than 30 minutes to work, and it also reflected the ease of travel and economic self-sufficiency.

In the 2010 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average commute time for a U.S. worker between 2006-10 was around 25 minutes.

According the report from The Business Journals, 22.06 percent of Ferndale commuters travel 14 minutes or less; 18.77 percent travel 30-44 minutes; and 11.5 percent travel 45 minutes or more.

Meanwhile, a report from the Census Transportation Planning Package says that a large percentage of Ferndale residents actually work where they live, with more than 13 percent traveling an average of one mile to work.

After that, Ferndale commuters are going to:

  • 9.6 percent commute to Troy.
  • 4.1 percent are going to Madison Heights.
  • Other popular cities for Ferndale residents to work include: Royal Oak, Southfield and Birmingham.

The report also outlines where commuters who work in Ferndale are coming from. Besides the city of Ferndale itself, many of Ferndale's workers are traveling from areas including Hazel Park, Oak Park, Royal Oak and Warren.
