Making the switch from mainstream drugstore or department store cosmetics and body products, to plant-based, organic ones may seem like a daunting task. But, there are places right in Ferndale, where products made from more natural ingredients and without chemicals can be found.
Rouge Make Up & Nail Studio on Woodward uses the Eve Organics skin care and mineral makeup line for their makeup application services and retail sales. The locally made brand is based in Macomb Township. Co-owner of Rouge Cheryl Salinas-Tucker stresses the importance of skin care prep as part of the makeup application process. They have everything from toner, cleanser and moisturizer to foundation (that also works as a concealer when used in conjunction with the moisturizer), eye shadow and blush. One exception to the items they carry from the Eve Organics collection is Honeybee Gardens mascara.
“It’s so good, they [Eve Organics] couldn’t improve on it, so they sell this mascara,” Salinas-Tucker said.
The staff at Rouge offers to sit down and go through a client’s makeup bag with them to help determine which non-toxic, plant-based and organic products would be good to replace the ones they’ve been using. Eve Organics doesn’t contain dyes, lakes, synthetic fragrance, bismuth oxychloride, talc, parabens, sulfates, and UREA. For some, this can be an emotional journey, as they may have been using a particular type of makeup for years, maybe even decades, having become attached to it.
Some might wonder if this type of makeup stays on and works as well as what they are used to using. “It works better,” Salinas-Tucker said.
If you’re leery or on a budget and want to start slow with one or two essential items, Salinas-Tucker recommends starting off with the moisturizer ($24) and foundation ($25).
Her sister and co-owner, Jennifer Bulatovic, offers manicure and pedicure services at Rouge using the SpaRitual nail care line. The vegan polish is free of DBP, formaldehyde and toluene—so there isn’t the smell of strong chemicals when having these services done. The nail products are also available for purchase.
Tantra spa carries the Zum line of all-natural aromatherapy body products by Indigo Wild. The handmade goods include lotions, salves, lip balms, massage oils, soaps and more. The list of natural scents they offer—too long to name them all—includes anise-lavender, lime-basil and rosemary-mint.
“They contain minimal ingredients, which is what you’re looking for with natural products,” Yvette Tremaine, Tantra spa owner said.
Zum is made with ingredients like 100 percent pure essential oils and goat’s milk.
“I totally believe in using ingredients from the earth. That’s why they were given to us,” Tremaine said, “There are no parabens, sulfates, no petroleum in any of the Zum products,” she added.
Switch up your toiletries with Zum bar soap ($6) or Zum mist room and body spray ($11). Gift sets are also available.
The Organic Food and Vitamin Center, as well as the carry an array of natural, organic toiletries such as soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and lip balm. They have items for babies too.
So, if you're thinking about going organic when it comes to makeup, Ferndale could be a first stop.
