No Major Street Flooding in Ferndale, DPW Director Says

Department of Public Works Director Byron Photiades said that the system was able to handle the water but the catch basins were clogged with debris causing standing water in some streets.

We're happy to report that the Crow's Nest at Woodward Avenue and Nine Mile Road is still there and hasn't floated away. However, the flood warning isn't over yet as .

"We haven't had any major flooding," Ferndale's Department of Public Works Director Byron Photiades said. "We've had standing water in the streets but not because the system couldn't handle the rain."

Photiades said that in most cases, the catch basin, those grates at the ends of streets, were clogged with debris.

Photiades said last night that DPW only had to answer two calls. One call was on East Saratoga where a catch basin was clogged. A resident had called about a growing pool of water in the street. DPW cleared the debris and the issue was fixed. DPW also answered a call of a fallen tree on West Breckenridge.

"We've been clearing the catch basins since 6 this morning," Photiades said. "They'll be all clear today."

Photiades said with this amount of rainfall, the catch basin could easily be clogged with lawn debris in the curb, litter, sticks, anything in the streets. He asks residents to clear the debris if they see the water starting to pool.

He also said keep kids out of the water. "It has oil and gas and pesticides and animal feces in it. Stay out of it," he said.
